Cobie is a Melbourne based dance maker working in areas including performance, installation and video. Her work investigates the kinetic, spatial and sonic possibilities that exist between dance, sound and the moving image, particularly in non-conventional performance spaces.
This enquiry manifested in its first public presentation in 2005 with intermedia performance, human_edit (Conical Gallery, Fitzroy). This garnered huge momentum and obsession for proceeding interdisciplinary projects including Carbon to Glass (c), Overtones, Mostly In between moments and the formation of arts collective Underpass, co-founded by Carlee Mellow, Alexandra Macdonald, Martin Hansen and Alisdair Macindoe. In 2010 she premiered The Lost Living in the Next Wave Festival, continuing the creative synergy with 2 Underpass members as well as composer Simon Charles, visual artist Andy Hutson and production guru and technical genius Blair Hart.
Getting out of the Melbourne is something Cobie likes to do regularly and has used choreographic residencies in Berlin, Antwerp, Lusanne, Sydney and Bundanon as a catalist for flight. Numerous film projects and performance installations have stemmed from, or been developed from, these precious experiences.
Cobie has also collaborated with numerous other practitioners in fields such as sound, literature, dance, film and visual art. Many of these works have gone on to premiere at Melbourne’s Biannual Next Wave festival, This is Not Art festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival and Mid Summa Festival.
She has worked closely with dance/filmmaker Tracie Mitchell since 2004 and has consequently gone on to make and produce her own screen works including Standing unempty, a quiet reflection, Hear her breathe and Type 1). They have each been official selections at Cinemoves and/or Danceflicks, and have toured internationally through the Reel dance initiative, “Dance Your socks off”. Reeldance in conjuntcion with the Next Wave festival also comissioned a 2 minute screendance work from Cobie in 2010 to premiere at the Next Wave Festival and then in the "Out of the Hat" program at the ReelDance festival where fine food, wine, flowers and people met to talk all things dance.
Alongside Cobie’s dance and artistic pursuits, she also runs her own video production business, working predominantly in the Arts for local dance organizations, Arts festivals, independent artists and councils, as well as the occasional birthday, wedding and party.
